    Scheme – High Budget

The Broad’s architecture features a veil and skylights that bring controlled, diffused daylight into the galleries. Collaboration with the architects resulted in a sustainable space using the veil as an external shading device, daylight harvesting, and lowenergy LED fixtures, earning the museum a LEED Gold certification. The original skylight design eliminates direct sunlight while controlling diffuse and reflected light, varying light levels with the season, time of day, and weather. Blackout blinds protect art during closed hours and accommodate light-sensitive exhibitions. Interior and exterior photocells adjust the interior light levels, with an automatic timeclock reducing energy use during closed hours. Creating the custom LED wallwashers was complex due to the gallery’s height and track spacing. Numerous mock-ups were conducted to ensure even light distribution and compliance with California’s Title 24 standards. A ‘Lighting Handbook’ was also provided to guide the museum staff in configuring the daylight system for different exhibitions, ensuring the lighting always complements the artwork.
